Men´s underwear developed slowly and remained only a few advancements ahead of the triangular wrap of the basic loincloth for centuries. Ribbons and buttons were added. Front flaps that predicated the front of Hanes brand and Jockey brand underwear were introduced. However, underwear was generally only worn by the wealthiest of nobles.

Eli Whitney´s invention of the cotton gin in 1793 and Elias Howe receiving a US patent for his newly invented sewing machine in 1846 quickly turned the tide in underwear production and design.
